Year 5 is an exciting and challenging year! The children are expected to take a more mature and independent approach towards learning. These skills are developed throughout the year during a variety of tasks and lessons and provide the key foundations that prepare our children for the challenges of year 6. In the summer term, we have planned a week's residential trip to Hining House, a specialist outdoor pursuits centre in the Lake District. This represents a fantastic opportunity to develop their resilience and further skills that they may not have even discovered yet.
We have lots of exciting work planned for this term, from looking at Anglo-Saxons and Vikings in topic to studying properties of materials in Science! We will be working very hard on improving handwriting and presentation this term.
Reading is a key focus: The children have a home reading book that they are free to change whenever they finish and can do so as often as necessary. It is the children’s responsibility to sort out their books. Children can also choose a library book, a silent reading book and are free to bring in their own books from home. In addition, we have guided reading sessions in school and take part in the Reading Plus Project, which involves the children accessing an on-line resource to improve their reading pace and accuracy.
