Welcome to Year 3 (Blackbirds)

Welcome to spring term!

It looks a little different to usual, with some children still in school but most learning at home. Home learning can be accessed online daily, which links with everything we are still doing in class. You can see this through our class Twitter page ‘Year 3 Starlings’. This feed can also be viewed on our class page on the school website. Please ensure you send work to Miss Gittins on Twitter or Class Dojo.

In English this term, we will study a variety of authors such as Emily Gravett and Roald Dahl. As well as reading, we will be learning lots of new grammar skills to help us with our writing, both fiction and non-fiction. There will be a big focus on reading skills and children are encouraged to read at home on a daily basis or access Read Theory which they have a login for. They need to bring their reading book to school every day and take it home. There are some amazing certificates and English prizes to be won for completing reading challenge activities.

Children will continue to build on their number and place value skills, with a big focus on completing our work on the four operations. This will lead us into learning about fractions. We will practice our times tables daily and this will also be included as part of homework. Children are expected to frequently learn their times tables at home in order to build on their skills in class. This can be done by logging onto TT Rock Stars.

Our topic for spring term is Roman Britain. This is part of our history curriculum and we are all really excited to get started. We will be learning about the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain at the time and the legacy it left us. We will explore Roman mosaics and make a Roman shield through art, look at Roman buildings and engineering, learn about the battle of Colchester and study Roman numerals and calendars.

As part of our ‘What is God Like?’ topic in R.E, we will be learning about different beliefs and understanding the feelings of others.

In Science, we will be learning all about the human body, health and nutrition and also focusing on the importance of exercise.
Another exciting term ahead for Year 3 Starlings!
